Holy Scripture repeatedly teaches us that each believer is an individual member of the Church community, with various rights and duties, just as our bodies are made up of different members and organs. St. Paul explains this to the people of Rome, saying that just as in one body we have many members, and not all members have the same function, so also we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members of one another. (Romans 12:4-5).
Belonging to a church offers each believer the protection and guidance of the pastors of that church, as Saint Paul also reveals to us: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls and will give an account for them, so that they may do this with joy and not with sighing, for that would be of no benefit to you” (Hebrews 13:17).
Also, when you are a member of a church, you take on Christian faith and teaching before the world, as a follower of Christ, as He Himself said: “For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38).
Financial support is vital to the life of a church, and giving has strong roots in the Bible. In the Old Testament, people gave a tenth of their income to support their religious community, and the New Testament teaches us that giving should be voluntary and joyful, as a way of showing faith and supporting God’s work.
The operational costs of running a church include the maintenance of buildings, land, and utilities, such as cleaning, heating, and lighting, to keep the space welcoming and functional.
The pastor, often along with the deacon, singer, or sexton, works full-time to carry out the activities of the parish in the best possible conditions, and these positions must be paid for the work performed.
The church’s social and educational programs, such as Sunday school and community activities, require materials and sometimes additional staff.
The significance of contributions to the church goes beyond immediate financial needs. By supporting the church, members play an essential role in broader humanitarian and educational missions. The church is often a beacon of hope and support in times of crisis, providing aid to those affected by natural disasters, war, and more. These efforts demonstrate the church’s role not only as a place of worship but also as a vital part of the social fabric that responds to challenges with compassion and practical assistance.
When church members donate money, they are actually investing in their own community or family, helping the church remain a welcoming place for prayer and mutual aid, building a stable and strong religious institution.
Church funds contribute to creating an environment conducive to the formation of future leaders and thinkers, key figures in society. Through youth programs, scholarships, and educational initiatives, churches invest in the young people who will shape the future of their communities and beyond. This focus on empowering young people helps ensure that the values and teachings of the church will continue to influence future generations.
Thanking everyone for their generosity, we ask that you continue to support our church through donations and annual membership, which you can give directly at the church or online via Interac e-Transfer at sfioanevanghelistul@outlook.com.
