In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Glory to You, our God, Glory to You! (three times)
Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, Who art everywhere and fulfillest all things, Treasure of all good things and Giver of life, come and dwell within us, and cleanse us from all defilement and save, O Good One, our souls.
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us! (three times)
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins. Master, forgive our transgressions. Holy One, examine and heal our infirmities, for Your name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy (three times)
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.
Through the prayers of the Most Holy Mother of God, of our Holy Fathers, and of all the Saints, O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. Amen.
Lord, have mercy (12 times).
Then these troparia:
Let us now, sinners and the humble, hasten with zeal to the Mother of God, and fall down in repentance, crying out from the depths of our souls: O Lady, help us, having mercy on us; hasten, for we are perishing from the multitude of our sins; do not turn your servants away unhelped, for in you alone have we found our hope.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
We will not be silent, Mother of God; we, the unworthy, will forever proclaim your powers. For if you had not stood before Him in prayer, who would have delivered us from so many trials? Or who would have kept us free until now? We will not turn away from you, O Lady, for you always deliver your servants from all trials.
Come, let us worship our King and God.
Come, let us worship and prostrate ourselves before Christ, our King and God.
Come, let us worship and prostrate ourselves before Christ Himself, our King and God.
Psalm 50
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my transgression, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgression, and my sin is ever before me. Against You alone have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight; therefore You are righteous in Your words and victorious when You judge. For behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sin my mother bore me. For behold, You have loved truth; You have revealed to me the unsearchable and hidden things of Your wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. You will give joy and gladness to my ear; my humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Grant me the joy of Your salvation, and strengthen me with Your ruling Spirit. I will teach the lawless Your ways, and those who do not believe in You will turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You will open my lips, and my mouth will proclaim Your praise. For if You had desired sacrifice, I would have offered it; but You do not delight in burnt offerings. The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure, to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be rebuilt. Then You will accept the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offerings; then they will place calves on Your altar.
First Ode
Crossing the waters as on dry land and escaping the wickedness of the Egyptians, the Israelites cried out: Let us sing to our Savior and our God.
Most Holy Mother of God, have mercy on us (repeat after the troparia that are not preceded by “Glory…” or “And now…”)
Overwhelmed by many temptations, I run to you, seeking salvation; O Mother of the Word and Virgin, deliver me from evil and from my troubles.
The burdens of my trials trouble me, and my soul is filled with many sorrows; soothe them, O Virgin, with the peace of your Son and God, for you are wholly without blemish.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
To you, who gave birth to the Savior and God, I pray, O Virgin, deliver me from my troubles; for now my soul and my thoughts turn to you for refuge.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Since I am sick in body and soul, make me worthy of Your divine care and protection, O Mother of God, for You are good and the Mother of the Good One.
Third Ode
Lord, You who made the things above the heavenly vault and built the Church, strengthen me in Your love; for You are the fulfillment of all desires and the strength of the faithful, O One, Lover of mankind.
I place you, O Virgin Mother of God, as my help and the shelter of my life; guide me to your refuge, for you are the source of all goodness and the strength of the faithful, the One praised above all.
I beseech you, O Virgin, dispel the turmoil of my soul and the storm of my sorrows; for you, O divine Bride, have given birth to Christ, the source of peace, and you are all-pure.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
You who gave birth to the Doer of good, Who is the source of all goodness, let the abundance of good deeds flow to all; for you can do all things, since you gave birth to Christ, mighty in strength, blessed by God.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Overwhelmed by terrible infirmities and the torments of illness, O Virgin, help me; for I know you to be an inexhaustible and unspent treasure of healing, you who are wholly without blemish.
Deliver your servants from their troubles, Mother of God, for we all take refuge in you, after God, as in an indestructible wall; be our helper.
Look with mercy, all-praised Mother of God, upon the terrible affliction of my body and heal the pain of my soul.
Sedelna
You who are a fervent intercessor and an invincible wall, a fountain of mercy and the world’s refuge, we cry out to you with all our hearts, Mother of God: Lady, come quickly and save us from our troubles, for you are ever ready to help.
Fourth Hymn
I have heard, O Lord, the mystery of Your plan; I have understood Your works and have glorified Your Divinity.
Soothe the turmoil of my passions and the storm of my sins, O divine Bride who gave birth to the Lord, the Righteous One.
As I call upon the depths of Your mercy, grant it to me, O You who gave birth to the Merciful One and the Savior of all who praise You.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As you sweeten us, Most Pure One, with your gifts, we sing a song of thanksgiving to you, knowing you to be the Mother of God.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Having found in you—who are praised in all things—hope, strength, and an unshakable wall of refuge, we are saved from every affliction.
The Fifth Hymn
Enlighten us, O Lord, with Your commandments and with Your mighty arm; grant us Your peace, O Lover of mankind.
Fill my heart with joy, O Most Pure One, granting me Your imperishable joy, for You have given birth to the cause of joy.
Deliver us from danger, O Pure Mother of God, for You have given birth to eternal salvation and peace that surpasses all understanding.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Dispel the darkness of my sins, divine Bride, with the radiance of your light, you who gave birth to the divine and eternal light.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Heal, O Pure One, the weakness of my soul, making me worthy of your visitation; and grant me health through your prayers.
Sixth Hymn
I will pour out my prayer to the Lord and tell Him my troubles; for my soul is filled with evil, and my life has drawn near to hell, and like Jonah I pray: O God, deliver me from destruction!
Just as He saved my nature—which was held captive by death and corruption—from death and corruption by giving Himself up to death, O Virgin, pray to your Son and your God that He may deliver me also from the wickedness of my enemies.
I know you, O Virgin, to be a most helpful and powerful protector of my life, who dispels the turmoil of temptation and drives away the oppressions of the demons; but I pray always: deliver me from the corruption of my torments.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
I have found in you, O Virgin, a wall of refuge, perfect salvation for souls, and relief in times of trouble; and we ever rejoice in your light, O Lady; and now deliver us from torments and afflictions.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Now I lie in the bed of suffering, and there is no healing for my body; but I pray to you, O Good One, who gave birth to God, the Savior of the world and Healer of diseases, to lift me up from the torment of my suffering. Deliver Your servants from their troubles, Mother of God, for we all take refuge in You, after God, as in an indestructible wall; be our helper.
Look with mercy, all-praised Mother of God, upon the terrible affliction of my body and heal the pain of my soul.
Kontakion
You, who are an unfailing help to Christians and an ever-faithful intercessor before the Creator, do not overlook the prayers of sinners, but hasten, as a good mother, to our aid, as we pray to you with faith: hasten to our prayers and intercede for our salvation, ever defending those who honor you, Mother of God.
I will proclaim your name throughout all generations.
Stich: Listen, O daughter, and see; incline your ear, and forget your people and your father’s house.
Read, then, with all humility, love, and reverence, this passage from
the Gospel of Luke (1:39–49:56)
In those days, Mary set out and went in haste to the hill country, to a town of the tribe of Judah. She entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; and she cried out in a loud voice and said: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. “And why is this granted to me, that the Mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the child leaped for joy in my womb. And blessed is she who believed that what was spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has looked with favor on the lowliness of His servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And Mary stayed with her for about three months; then she returned to her home.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
Father, Word, and Spirit, Holy Trinity, cleanse us of our many sins.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Merciful One, cleanse us of our many sins.
Stich: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgressions.
Do not entrust me to human help, Most Holy Lady, but accept the prayer of Your servant, for tribulation overwhelms me and I cannot endure the arrows of the demons. I have found no refuge anywhere to save me, unworthy as I am. Always being overcome, I have no comfort except in you, Mistress of the world; hope and helper of the faithful, do not overlook my prayer, but do what is helpful.
No one who runs to you leaves in shame, Most Pure Mother of God, Virgin. But whoever asks for the good gift receives it in accordance with their need.
You are the transformation of the afflicted and the deliverance of the helpless; O Virgin Mother of God, save this land and its people, for you are the peace of those at war, the calm of those in turmoil, and the sole helper of the faithful.
Seventh Hymn
The young men who once journeyed from Judea to Babylon, by their faith in the Trinity, trod upon the flames of the furnace, singing: “God of our fathers, you are blessed!”
When You desired to fulfill our salvation, Savior, You dwelt in the womb of the Virgin, whom You revealed to the world as a source of help. God of our fathers, blessed are You!
O Most Pure Mother, ask the One who is the Source of mercy, whom you gave birth to, to save from sin and spiritual defilement those who cry out in faith: God of our fathers, blessed are You!
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
Treasure of salvation and fountain of purity, tower of strength and gate of repentance, You have revealed to those who cry out: “God of our fathers, blessed are You!” the One who gave birth to You!
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
From bodily infirmities and spiritual sins, grant healing to those who come with love to your divine protection, O Mother of God, who gave birth to Christ our Savior.
Eighth Ode
Do not overlook those who need your help, O Virgin, whom we sing of and exalt for all eternity.
Heal the weakness of my soul and the pains of my torments, O Virgin, that I may glorify you, O Most Pure One, forever.
We bless the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the Lord.
You pour out a wealth of healings, O Virgin, upon those who praise you with faith and exalt your ineffable Birth.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
You drive away the oppression of temptations and the onslaught of passions, O Virgin; therefore we praise you for all eternity.
Let us praise, speak well of, and worship the Lord, singing to Him and exalting Him for all eternity.
The Heavenly King, whom the angelic hosts praise, praise Him and exalt Him forever and ever.
The Ninth Hymn
Truly, Mother of God, we who have been saved through you confess you as the pure Virgin, glorifying you together with the bodiless hosts.
Do not turn away from the fountain of my tears, O Virgin, you who gave birth to Christ, He who has wiped away every tear from the faces of all.
Fill my heart with joy, O Virgin, you who received the fullness of joy and cast aside all sorrow.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
With the radiance of your light, O Virgin, dispel the darkness of ignorance and drive it away from those who faithfully confess you as the Mother of God.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Heal me, O Virgin, as I lie sick in this place of evil, and restore me from sickness to health.
Catavasia
O most radiant cloud, Mother of God, strike down those who fight against us with your ruling and almighty right hand; help those who are in distress; save the oppressed; and free from sin those who pray to you, for you can do all things according to your will.
Then:
It is truly fitting to bless you, O Mother of God, ever-blessed and most innocent, and Mother of our God. You who are more honorable than the Cherubim and incomparably more exalted than the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption—we magnify you, the true Mother of God.
Let us honor with songs the one who is higher than the heavens and purer than the sun’s rays, who has delivered us from the curse, the Lady of the world.
Because of my many sins, my body is afflicted and my soul grows weak; I take refuge in you, who are full of gifts; hope of the hopeless, help me.
Lady and Mother of the Savior, accept the prayer of your unworthy servants, that you may intercede with Him who was born of you; O Lady of the world, be our intercessor.
We now sing with zeal songs of joy to you, who are praised in all things, Mother of God. Together with the Forerunner and all the Saints, pray to Him, Mother of God, that He may save us.
All the angelic hosts, Forerunner of the Lord, the twelve apostles, and all the Saints, together with the Mother of God, pray that we may be saved.
May the mouths of the pagans be silenced, who do not worship your venerable icon, the one painted by the holy apostle and evangelist Luke, which is called “The Guide.”
Be merciful to me, the humble one, Mother of God, for apart from you I know no other refuge, I who am full of every kind of sin. Have mercy on me, the hope of Christians.
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us! (three times)
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us of our sins. Master, forgive our transgressions. Holy One, examine and heal our infirmities, for Your name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy (three times)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
And the troparia:
Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us, for, knowing no other answer, we offer this prayer to You, our Master; we, Your sinful servants, have mercy on us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Lord, have mercy on us, for in You we have put our hope; do not be too angry with us, nor remember our transgressions, but look upon us now with mercy and deliver us from our enemies, for You are our God and we are Your people, all the work of Your hands, and we call upon Your name.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Open to us the door of mercy, O blessed Mother of God, so that we who hope in you may not perish, but may be saved through you from our troubles, for you are the salvation of the Christian people.
Lord, have mercy (12 times)
Then these stichera:
You pray for all, O Good One, who take refuge with faith under your mighty protection; for we sinners have no other deliverance from God in our troubles and afflictions, being ever burdened with many sins, O Mother of the Most High God. Therefore we fall before you, that you may deliver us, your servants, from all our needs.
Stich: I will proclaim your name among all nations and peoples.
Joy of all who are afflicted, help to the oppressed, and nourishment to the hungry; comfort to strangers, shelter to the homeless, care for the sick, protection for the helpless, and support in old age—you are, Most Pure One, the Mother of the Most High God; to you we pray: hasten to save your servants.
Stich: Listen, O daughter, and see; incline your ear and forget your people and your father’s house.
Rejoice, Most Pure Virgin; rejoice, the honorable scepter of Christ the King; rejoice, you who nurtured the mystical vine; rejoice, gate of heaven and unburnt bush; rejoice, light of the whole world; Rejoice, joy of all; rejoice, salvation of the faithful; rejoice, protector and refuge of all Christians, O Lady!
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Rejoice, praise of the whole world; rejoice, house of the Lord; rejoice, shaded mountain; rejoice, refuge; rejoice, golden candlestick; rejoice, Most Pure One, glory of Christians; Rejoice, Mary, Mother of Christ our God; rejoice, paradise; rejoice, divine table; rejoice, church; rejoice, golden crown; rejoice, joy of all!
Prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God
My most blessed Lady, helper of the human race, refuge and salvation of those who run to you! I know, I truly know that I have sinned greatly and have angered you, most merciful Lady, as well as the most gracious God, who was born of you in the flesh. I recall the many examples of those who, before me, provoked His goodness: the tax collectors, the harlots, and the other sinners who were granted forgiveness of their sins because of their repentance and confession. Therefore, placing these blessed figures before the eyes of my sinful soul and beholding the great mercy they received from God, I, too, a sinner, have dared to run with repentance to your gracious mercy, O Most Pure Lady; to extend a helping hand to me and to ask Your Son for forgiveness of my grave sins. I believe and confess that He whom You gave birth to is truly Christ, the Son of the living God, the Judge of the living and the dead, who will reward each person according to his deeds. I also believe and confess that you are truly the Mother of God, the fountain of mercy, the comfort of those who mourn, the helper of the lost, a powerful and unceasing intercessor before God, who loves the Christian people, and who stands ready to guide me aright. For indeed there is no other help or refuge for people besides you, O most merciful Lady, and no one who hopes in you and intercedes with God through you is ever forsaken. For this reason, I implore your boundless goodness: open to me the doors of your mercy, for I have strayed and fallen into the deep mire. Do not be disgusted with me, and do not overlook my prayer, that of a sinner; and do not abandon me, the unworthy one, whom the evil enemy has wickedly carried off to destruction, but appease for my sake the merciful God, who was born of you, that He may forgive my sins and save me from my destruction; so that I, too, together with all those who have received forgiveness, may sing and glorify the immeasurable mercy of God, who was born of you, and your incomparable benefit to me, in this life and for ever and ever. Amen.
Second Prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God
My most gracious Queen and my hope, Mother of God, helper of the poor and host to strangers, joy of the sorrowful and shelter of the afflicted, see my need and my distress; help me as one who is helpless, and feed me as a stranger. You know my distress; resolve it as You will, for I have no help but You, Mother of God, to protect and shelter me forever and ever. Amen.
