Father Liviu Galaction Munteanu – the confessor teacher

Image Stefan Morariu Sunday March 11th, 2018

Prof. Liviu Galaction Munteanu în arest - 1959Born May 16, 1898 in a family of teachers, Liviu Galaction Munteanu was originally from Cristian, Brasov County. He was formed as a theologist at “Andrei Şaguna” High School in Braşov and at the Theological and Pedagogical Institute of Sibiu, then at the Faculty of Theology of Cernăuţi, where he obtained his doctorate. It was noted by Bishop Nicholas Ivan, who ordained him a priest and appointed Professor at the Theological Academy in Cluj, thus becoming the holder of the New Testament, a spiritualist, then a rector of this institution.

During the Horthyist occupation he remained in Cluj, providing with the bishop Nicolae Colan a nucleus of Romanian and Orthodox resistance. Despite all the opposition from the communist authorities after 1948, Bishop Nicolae Colan kept Professor Galaction at the helm of the new theological institute until his abolition in 1952. His attempts to train theology students in order to respond to the hardships imposed by the state authorities drew the attention the Securitate organs that were constantly following him, arresting him in 1952 and putting him under pressure to stop his activity. He was assigned to a parish in Bistrita, this time bending over the catechization of the children.

On 6 June 1958, priest Galaction Munteanu was appointed administrative vicar at the request of the new Bishop Teofil Herineanu, who had a rehabilitation project for catechization in the diocese of Cluj. Father Galaction drew up a program for the catechesis of children and adults, for which he obtained the approval of the Eparchial Permanence and was broadcast to the priests in the Episcopate.

The enthusiasm manifested by some priests alerted the Securitate that blocked the whole action, and the priest Galaction was arrested. The following was tragic: Father Galaction, investigated with great cruelty by the Securitate, was sent to justice on May 6, 1959, being sentenced to eight years of correctional imprisonment, the legal framing being “conspiracy against social order.” At the Aiud Penitentiary on March 8, 1961, Father Liviu Galaction Munteanu passed to the eternal, following the inhuman treatment he had been subjected to.
