[:en]In 1933, photographic album „Romania” appeared in Leipzig, under the signature of photographer Kurt Hielscher, a fascinating album that would capture the atmosphere of the interwar years as few such albums did.
Hielscher reported in a „Foreword” how he came to this album: „In 1931, I was invited by the Romanian Government to travel as a guest in Romania and to make a book like Germany, Spain, Italy, the Countries Nordic, etc. On the eve of my journey a well-known writer wondered wondering, „Why should you waste your time with this work? What are you going to find in Romania? „Many people have the same opinion. How little is known about this country … ”
Hielscher was going to continue: „But besides the thanks I felt, working, I was grieved that the whole Romanian people is threatened by a cruel enemy, because the culture of this blessed country is approaching the heavy clouds of the West: the dust of civilization that stifles every life full of color. Some villages have also been shrouded; the gray cloud increasingly covers the ancestral tools and the cheerful color of the costumes, drowning them in the extinct monochrome of fashion everywhere. That’s how he gradually loses himself, a people with artistic sense, his old appearance. That’s why we put so much importance in these photos to folk life to the detriment of the landscape. It seems to me that I can save my book for future times, which is slowly and continuously destined to perish. [:ro]În 1933, apărea la Leipzig, sub semnătura fotografului Kurt Hielscher, albumul fotografic “România”, un album fascinant care avea să surprindă atmosfera anilor interbelici așa cum puține albume asemănătoare au făcut-o.

Hielscher a relatat într-un „Cuvânt Înainte” cum a ajuns să realizeze acest album: “În anul 1931, am fost invitat de Guvernul român să călătoresc ca oaspete în România și să alcătuiesc o carte asemănătoare celor despre Germania, Spania, Italia, Țările Nordice etc. În ajunul călătoriei mele un scriitor cunoscut m-a întrebat cu mirare: „De ce să-ți pierzi timpul tău scump cu lucrarea aceasta? Ce-o să găsești deosebit în România?” Mulți trebuie să aibă aceeași părere. Ce puțin se știe despre această țară…”

Tot Hielscher avea să continue: “Dar pe lângă mulțumirea pe care am simțit-o, lucrând, m-a cuprins și durerea că întreg poporul român este amenințat de un dușman crunt, căci de cultura acestei țări binecuvântate de soare se apropie norii grei ai Occidentului: praful civilizației care înăbușe orice viață plină de coloare. Unele sate au și fost învăluite; norul cenușiu acoperă tot mai mult uneltele strămoșești și coloarea veselă a costumelor, înecându-le în monocromia stinsă a modei de pretutindeni. Așa își pierde treptat, un popor cu simț artistic, străvechea sa înfățișare. De aceea am dat în aceste fotografii atâta importanță vieții populare în dauna peisajului. Mi se pare că aș putea salva astfel prin cartea mea, pentru timpurile viitoare, ceea ce încet și continuu este sortit pieririi. Fie ca o soartă prielnică să păstreze încă mult timp poporul acestor munți, văi și câmpii, în frumusețea și spontaneitatea sa.”
