This celebration honors the oldest saints known as martyrs in Dobruja, the Holy Martyrs Epictetus and Astion—whom the Orthodox Church commemorates every year on July 8—and whose martyrdom is documented in the Acts of the Martyrs with the most detailed account of their lives and sufferings, the local bishop himself, His Grace Visarion, spoke to us.

Your Grace, within the Diocese of Tulcea are found the relics of the oldest known saints in our country, Sts. Epictetus and Astion, from the Halmyris Monastery. Please tell us about the historical sources that mention them.

They are known as the saints of Halmyris, the ancient Christian city situated on the banks of the Danube, which in antiquity was called “Almyra,” and who suffered a martyr’s death during the brutal persecution unleashed against the Christian Church by Emperor Diocletian (244–311) on July 8, 290. They are certainly the oldest martyrs from Dobruja reliably attested by hagiographic sources. We have information about their lives and sufferings in the Acts of the Martyrs, but, unfortunately, the martyrdom account dedicated to them has been preserved only in a late 15th-century copy, located in the Church of the Savior in Utrecht, which was published in 1615 by the Jesuit scholar Herbert Rosweyde (†1629).

In 1921, the Benedictine Dom Germain Morin discovered in the Hieronymian Martyrology the commemoration of Sts. Epictetus and Astion on May 23, “De S.S. Epictetus, presbyter, and Astion, monk, martyrs of Almirida in Scythia,” thereby confirming the veracity of the statements in the *Acta Sanctorum*, edited by N. Rosweyde, mentioned above. The renowned researcher and historian Raymund Netzhammer (1862–1945)—who later became the Catholic archbishop of Bucharest and left behind the work *Epiktet und Astion, diokletianische Martyrer am Danaudelta* (Zug, 1937)—also drew upon passages from the *Acta Sanctorum* in his study on the two holy martyrs. Similarly, the Byzantinologist Prof. Dr. Emilian Popescu produced a scholarly study on their lives and activities in the work *Romanian Saints and Defenders of the Ancestral Law* (Bucharest, 1987).

The Miracles on the Banks of the Danube

Your Grace, what can you tell us about the lives and miracles performed by Saints Epictetus and Astion?

From the aforementioned documents, we know that during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, there lived in the East—probably in Phrygia (Asia Minor)—a priest named Epictetus, who led a pure and devout life. For this reason, God honored him with the gift of performing miracles, healing many sick people—a young woman who was completely paralyzed was healed, a young man possessed by an evil spirit was delivered through the power of prayer, and a blind woman who regained her sight through the prayers of Priest Epictetus. One day, Epictetus met Astion—a handsome young man of pure character, from a distinguished and wealthy family. Through their conversations, Astion learns about the teachings of the Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ and about eternal bliss, which leaves a profound impression on him and prompts him to ask Priest Epictetus to take him as a disciple and enlighten his soul through the sacrament of Holy Baptism.

After receiving Holy Baptism, they both decided to leave those lands and retreat to a suitable place where they could live in holiness and preach the Christian faith to others. They boarded a ship and arrived at the city of Halmyris (today’s Dunăvăț), on the banks of the Danube, where they continued to live in purity and piety, performing many miracles there as well.

It is said that the priest Epictetus healed a deaf-mute paralytic, and as a result of this miracle, more than 1,000 residents of the city converted to the Christian faith. And the young Astion also received the gift of performing miracles, healing a man possessed by a demon and restoring to health a man who had fallen from a great height and was left nearly dead. After being denounced before the commander Latronianus, the two saints were brought before the judges, interrogated, imprisoned, and subjected to torture.

Despite all the trials inflicted upon them, they remained steadfast in their faith and even converted one of the judges, named Vigilantius, to Christianity. Ultimately, the saints were sentenced to death by beheading; their bodies were secretly taken by Christians, who then buried them in a suitable place. And the Acts of the Martyrs state that “many miracles continue to occur there to this day.” The veneration of the martyred priest Epictetus spread as far as Spain, where he is honored under the Latinized name Epitacius on May 23, the day on which these two saints are celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church.

After the triumph of Christianity in the year 313, the bodies of St. Epictetus and St. Astion were buried in the crypt of the episcopal basilica in Halmyris, where they remained, over the course of time, for 1,700 years, until their discovery—in a miraculous manner—on August 15, 2001. The holy relics were then retrieved, identified, studied, placed in reliquaries, and deposited at the Archiepiscopal Cathedral in Constanța, from where, every year on July 7—the eve of the saints’ feast day—they were brought to the “Annunciation” Cathedral in Tulcea, and the following day they were taken to Halmyris, where the feast of the saints was celebrated.

The oldest mention of monasticism in Dobruja

Your Excellency, what is the significance of the martyrdom of Sts. Epictetus and Astion for us?

For us Romanians, the martyrdom of Sts. Epictetus and Astion holds special significance because, alongside that of St. Emilian of Durostor (Silistra), it is the only one of which Dobrujan hagiographic literature can be proud. Furthermore, it sheds light on the history of religious life in Dobruja, illustrating the spread of the Christian faith in the territory between the Danube and the sea, as well as the persecutions to which the Christians of that time were subjected by the pagan Roman authorities. It mentions the name of the bishop of Tomis, the blessed Evangelicus, the most blessed Evangelicus, who oversaw church life in the region, where there were also other episcopal sees, including one at Halmyris. This account of their martyrdom reveals that Epictetus was a priest and Astion was a monk, making this the earliest record of monasticism in the Dobruja region.

Through the example of their lives and the strength of their faith, and by suffering a martyr’s death, St. Epictetus and Astion are honored as martyrs of the Church of Christ—the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church—serving as living examples for Christians of that time, as well as for those of today, in the service of Christ, the Church, and their fellow human beings.
